Tale of Two Cities
Well....been off for awhile and I've really missed some stellar opps to drop my three cents this summer. I'm not saying I'm baaaack Swartz style...but I am saying I will try and put it down a little more oft. The summer was incred and the planning for my 30th trip really took over, and then I got back into video games and doing other fun stuff, I handwrote a blog with my NFL Predictions, thinking it'd get me back into this, but sitting down for sometimes two hours to drop it so maybe 15 people...but more like five would read it and get a khackle just didn't seem worth it. My usual lunch break of reading Pos's blog got cut because I've been so busy at work....so let me hit you with this. I think I will try and keep my entries brief so Ii don't get turned off on this again. I'd like to hit you with the top 15 on a few things from the summer so I'm not backtracking....why fifteen? Lakers championships (until this year, I have the shirt), my number in sports, Vince Carter's number, Carlos Beltran's number, etc. I'd like to put up top 15 beers, video games, and songs...the songs will be entitled the summerjam mixtape and I'd like to get at it sometime this week.
Anyways....
I love travelling. Cannot get enough of it, I set the goal of seeing every MLB park not only to do it and say I've done it...but to experience other cities and their cultures for a brief moment. Whenever I'm somewhere I always think about where I would live and what Ii would do for fun....and sometimes when I'm driving somewhere local that is a bit far I think oh...what if I lived there...what would my daily commute be, how far would Ii be from the fun stuff, etc. It passes the time on car and plane trips. I am normally smitten kitten on a city after living it up for a weekend there and grabbing all the fun stuff and not having to think about the less than appealing stuff such as traffic, public transportation, cost of living, missing where I've been and hanging with my normal crowds. Its always good to step outside the box...but living outside the box? Less Glamourous.
I never really thought about it, but I did on my flight back from DC two weekends back. There is really quite a bit of similarities between there and St Louis. As perpost as this sounds hear me out. I should have written this down then, but it didn't occur to me, like when you're driving to work jammin out to music and then writing your own lyrics in your head and thinking about how money and popstar it would be, then you clock into work and forget about how awesome you are.
Areas to go out in:
Washington Ave vs. Georgetown
Soulard vs. Adams Morgan
Westport vs. Dupont Circle
Laclede's Landing vs. H St NE
I'm sure there's others...like St Chuck 4th street versus the touristy area around the mall with the Prohibition bar and ESPN SportsZone...I once did a Mall pub crawl and It was outstanding, I know there's cool bars in South City, but there's also cool bars around Verizon Wireless where the Caps and Wizards play. And there is redic cool bars sprinkled throughout both cities.
I love Wash Ave, so that wins in landslide fashion, soulard and Adams is a push, but since Adams has Jumbo Slice it ties it up....I'm a downtown guy...Westport sucks..and Dupont is pretty hot, having two Great Lakes brews gives it big ups, H St NE absolutely murders the Landing, after you get by the Big Bang and the cobblestone all you have is a bunch of teenagers with fake id's trying to impress the other by how much they can drink...boo yah Biergarten Haus and H St Country club by themselves would win this in a landslide...so DC wins, but it's closer than you thought
STL-arch, DC-White House,
I'm an engineer and I know about all the other cool stuff DC has to offer, but pound for pound the arch is just cool, parabola engineering back in the day is sweet, and a house that only someone and their family can hang at is pretty sweet...does the resale go up every four years?
Baseball.
Cardinals. I hate to say it...but the only reason I give Busch a slight edge on the Nat's new park is that its close to me and I go frequently. The atmosphere is obviously better in St Louis, but having live bands inside and an inflatable pool with a Mexican restaurant there makes it tough. The Nats are mid-to-late Royals bad and the Cards are Michael Jackson bad so St Lou wins.
Football.
Seriously? DC. Indoor football never wins. Next
Hockey
This is a toughie...the fanbase is electric in St Louis and loyal. Where I'm from...loyalty always wins. But the Caps are exciting to watch and have the best player in the NHL (Sorry Sid)
Basketball
hahaha. Arenas and Wall versus what? SLU basketball? I dig Chaifetz...but c'mon
Location.
Most people wouldn't consider this a category....thankfully I do. The subs are lined out fairly similar to what they are in StL, with our directions and sides, they have suburbs seeping out in MD and VA surrounding the District, but they have Balitmore, which wasn't more than an hour drive away, that has a baseball and football team and a somewhat cool downtown, Ii wasn't impressed first off, but maybe one day I'll give it another shot. STL is four hours from Chicago and KC, and if you push it and want to say Louisville is cool, that's four hours away as well....Philly and NYC are both within four hours, so I think DC wins. I've always wanted to visit the Illadelph...maybe next year....
Beers....
Yeah, this next one is gonna cause a ruckus. I know the locals here absolutely adore Schlafly, and yeah, I like it. It is no Boulevard, but it's pretty good. Tthey have a cask system and some cool events...who doesn't? Dogfishhead really has some excellent beers, and they have three brewpubs in the DC area....Schlafly only has two. Plus, their IPAs blow Schlafly out of the water. Like pirate style.
Metro vs. Metrolink
The Metro in DC is laid out very logically and the one in STL hits the major points and Ii love it...but it doesnt cut the cake. DC
I do love living in St Louis....so it gets another point because I'm here. But it still loses...closer than you thought though huh?
Beer of the Week: The less than a week old Budweiser I had at Oaf's wedding this weekend. It was truly fresh prince of bel air.
Game of the Week: Seriously? Halo.
Jam of the Week: Congratulations by Drake on the All This Rain & No Coat Mixtape. I've been listening to With You a lot though since Lil Wayne's new cd came out on monday...but for the week? Drake.

Mock Turtleneck? Too hot, I'll go mock draft
Yeah, sadly Mock Draft isn't a beer on draft at all...it's NBA Draft time, as some of you know, I love drafts almost as much as I love brackets, but I love telling people I was right a lot, but not as much as either. I will throw down my mock at the Loomega of this entry as most of you couldn't care that the Thunder have a Lake Superior amount of picks in the first round this year. The best part about it is that you get to hear David Stern announce "The rights to" trades and the deputy commish comes in and gets nasty with it in the Second Round. Watching this and doing mock drafts as a kid was possibly my favorite thing to do as a kid. I'd make my parents or Phil do mock drafts and compare at the end and I'd always be upset with whomever the Lakers decided to choose...with the exception of when the LakeShow snagged Farmar late and Walto early..good year, like a fine wine.
If you would have said to me in March that the Royals will be leading the Majors in hitting and still be 12 games under five hundo, I'd have said you were Fish-nutz...if youu said Strasburg would come up prior to September, effortlessly dominate, and be the first reason DC fans paid attention to baseball I'd have said..highly unlikely. Wow. I could ramble ramble about this for days. I'm just Witchta State Shockers about it. That's all. Big ups to KC for mowing down Strazzy yesterday. Boomer Sooner or later Yost will have to realize that Kendall is not a #2 hitter and doesn't need to play every day. Hopefully we can get some sweet payback for Guillen, who is utterly on fire with his 16-game hitting streak. Win, win, win for us, get rid of his ridiculous salary, move DDJ back to LF, and get prospects in return...and free up an OF spot for Gordo or a DH slot for the Big Hawaiian. Stay tuned, I got tix to all three games this weekend. Score!
Beer of the Week:
Tossup. I hate when Wilbon pushes, but I had three outstanding beers this weekend in Omaha at a place that serves champagne on tap. I narrowed it down to two, and really one is a centemental fave...you just don't see the big boys making and marketing amber beers like they used to. Killian's Irish Red was the big dog at the dogpark when I was in Rolla, pitcher of Killian's please! Amber bock has withstood the test of time, this could catch on, but for some redic reason they are only selling it in Nebrasska. It's Boulevard's Amber Ale and it is exquisite!!! The Lucky Bucket was the other. It is made right there in Nebraska and bars run out of it nonstop because they can have a bad batch and their production isn't Godzilla. If you're up there, try both. You won't be upset.
Game of the Week:
World Cup on the Iphone. This thing is pretty solid and it was only $3 bucks. Winning world cups on the crapper makes me feel dapper.
Movie of the Week:
Dude, Where's My Car. This is in honor of my buddy Aaron who constantly misplaces his ride. After this weekend, first thing I did was pop this in and enjoy. Why did saying Shibby never catch on? Timeless.
Jam of the Week:
The Kids by B.O.B. Featuring Janelle Monae. Anything in a reggae/rap style that mentions being trapped inside the matrix is catchy. I got hooked on it at my desk at work and on the plane, and when someone busted it out on the speaks on the rooftop kegs'n'eggs party in downtown Omaha....I knew it was golden goal. Loomsbestdayever.com...hahaha haven't been to bigdaddy to grab this one up. Honestly, I probably wont...but it would be supersweet.

Vintage Lakers
Okay, okay, okay....you caught me again...little late on the bloggage...but serie...only like ten people get their left-to-right on so no big. Gotta keep the faithful happy...that's what Dayton Moore says...I wish...this is going to be a catchup blog with a brief rant about Yost just to catch you up to everything up until last thursday, as is my usual customary weekly blog, I'll try and beef you up on everything this thursday pre-nba draftage.
Hot Tub Time Machine Beer of the Week:
Loom, didn't you go to the St Louis Heritage Beer Festival!? I'm sure one of those goodies got a free pass for beer of the week. Yes, I had approximately four good beers there. By good, I obviously mean above average enough to mention so roughly a 7.5/10. I did, however, rock the Bridge Taphouse and thouroughly enjoy a Maharaja by Avery Brewing Co. I do like their IPA...but this is like whoa. If you're ever in there check it on draft. It's pretty Lake Superior.
Delorean Jam of The Week:
Young Forever by Jay-Z (Feat. Mr Hudson) Mad props to MTVU for playing this. Yes, I have fallen into old habbits and turn to that when nothing is on. Whatev, the music vid is borderline stinsfire...but the song is spicy. Spicy than the Colonel's wanna be hot sauce and "Cajun style" Chicken.
Bill & Ted Game of the Week:
I ordered World Cup 2010 for 360. I was not disappointed. My favorite teams when I was a kid were USA and France. France is terrible now and USA is semi-good. The sounds and graphics are pretty McRib. Remember when Homer followed the McRib around and skipped out on Lisa's spelling bee? Wonder if it was worth it....I love McRibs. I wish they had the 12th Street Diner's Fries.
I cannot stand the Kendall in the two-hole batting order. It is absolutely rediculous. I am all for guys trying new things. This is a catastrophe. I hate it. Put Aviles back up there and sink Kendall. He has no power or speed and contact hitting that high gets you virtually nowhere. The dude averages 5 hr's a year. Either put Aviles back up and leave everything the way it is or bump DDJ into the twohole and B-Butt back up to the threespot. Guillen is increasing trade value so you may as well feature him in the cleanup...hopefully this will make us see some Hawaiian Punch or Gordo action after the trade deadline. September seems so far away....
By the way...how sweet was it for the Lakers to repeat!?!?

Welcome to the Summer, I'm the Captian of the Cool Kids
Sippin' Beer Roof Top
Bags, Swimmin with my Lid
Hahaha, little verse of awesome, hold the awesome. Remember my new haircut? That was a YouTube sensation. Muscle Milk! Powerbars! Haven't seen that in awhile, really think it's time to revisit that and Like A Boss by The Lonely Island. Gotta make this entry rather quick, gotta clean up because the 'rents are coming! I don't know if any of you saw Strasburg in action Tuesday...but he was filthy. It is hard (That's what she said) to not get into Strasmania. I remember Prior throwing a similar game, but wow. The possibility exists that the Royals will take on Strasburg on June 23. I can't wait to see that. The second-best hitting team against the phenom, Steven Koufax himself. Excited.
As I said, rather quick....here ya go:
Game of the Week:
NBA Ballers:Rebound on PSP
This game has been rediscovered thanks to Oaf. I am now addicted to the Rags to Riches portion of the game. There is more unlockable bling in this one also. Plus, the added bonus of being able to play it while I drop bombs brings it above the rest.
Beer of the Week:
This may come as a surprise to others, but my third-favorite beer is rarely mentioned in passing or on here. I played in a volleyball league game last night and had an ice cold one and it really was refreshing. It reminded me of getting one at a ballgame. Except better. Just look at this picture and try and pretend that you don't now crave one...
Loomism of the Week:
I love cherries. Rainier cherries are my absolute fave. Bing cherries are a close second. I call them Chandler Bing Bombs. Try. Repeat. Enjoy.
Jam of the Week:
"Hello, Good Morning" by Diddy featuring T.I.
This jam is hot. Diddy is trying to bust back onto the scene. His last song, "Angels" with an old verse from BIG was terrible, he's trying to get on the T-Pain voicebox thing. It sounds like he downloaded the "I am T-Pain" app on ITunes and just talked with it with some goofy beat in the background. Somewhere singles of this track are in the same junkheap that E.T. for Atari 2600 is no doubt in. Somewhere in Vegas. I'm not so sure about his new album that drops sometime this month. I'll do the ol' wait and see approach on that one. If you hear otherwise, let me know.
Movie of the Week:
"Lakers v. Celtics"
I have "Shutter Island" here and can't wait to sit down and watch it. Lakers-Celts should be an ongoing movie, the series has been less than spectacular, but by no means a snoozer. Fisher has really came alive and his postgame interview Tuesday night was fantastic. The rivalry is epic, if you can't get into this, then you can't get into the NBA. I saw return of jafar and toy story 2 on sunday. Return of Jafar was absolutely terrible, its a shame that Disney even attempted to release it. Straight to video was no shocker, Aladdin was my favorite Disney movie of all time, if Ii can't warm up to the sequel...no one can. Toy Story 2 was exceptional in Blu-Ray. If you're going to harp on my ingenuity then that's my "movie" choice.
I created a new cd. It's entitled "No Socks Just Spicy." It's pretty hot. I may be tempted to throw out the mix...if you sign something saying I'm not liable for when it overheats your cd player or turns your ipod into flames then I'll throw it down next week.
Beginning of the Beginning of the End
Hahaha, I totally spacemaned and forgot to finalize the Loom Bracket of Awesome. I didn't get quite the response that I had hoped for, so it slipped until I saw the bracket on the floor. So Ii will throw it down to the final four, hence the title of this blog. I can't believe how far a few games went or didn't go, this really puts the idea in my head of what is the best way to determine a champion. The NCAA has three distinct styles, which, in my opinion, are the best format for each sport. The BCS really gets knocked around hard, but it really does a descent job of getting the best out there. They should use it when the inevitably go to an 8 or 16 team playoff format because everyone loves money in college sports. There is virtually no leadership and they are willing to let people do whatever they want. One of the biggest power conferences is about to be ripped apart due to the Pac-10. I'm all for competition, but if I am a student athlete, I'm not sure I'd be enthralled with travelling across the country on weeknights all the time then coming home and going to class, it seems like the best interest of the student-athlete was lost a long time ago. They are treated like robots in a lot of cases, I don't want to get into the "They should get paid" argument, because I believe a free education and a weekly stipend is an incredible gift that many take for granted, but if everyone is looking for their best interest, what kind of realignment can we figure? I hate Kansas. Despise. Everyone knows this and I make no secret of it. But, hypothedically, if Mizzou and Nebraska book it to the Big Ten and Colorado, Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech jet for the Pac-10 that leaves Kansas, Kansas State, Baylor, and Iowa State to fend for themselves. I love how the Big 12 has screwed Mizzou twice. Royally. The year we beat KU and they let them go to the BCS game and then last year when they let Iowa State wiggle ahead of us into a better bowl game. I am all for Mizzou leaving and going to the Big Ten. More academic prestige, we'd still have Illinois and Nebraska as rivals, and I would love if we played Notre Dame every year. No one knows if Notre Dame is going to commit, but I keep hearing them and Rutgers come up in conversation. I guess time will tell. The college world series format is somewhat similar to the 65-team bracket with the regionals setup, but is a little bit more confusing. There is no one-and-done and complications arise. This suits baseball a bit better, but makes a pool at the office nearly impossible, that and the fact that nearly no one follows college baseball, except maybe fans of crappy MLB teams that have high picks. I pay attention a bit more than I should. Aluminum bats? Bit silly. Anyways, digression over, some games I thought were really good and would easily make the elite eight were upset by others. This is perhaps temper mental, but so is college hoops. Certain teams match up better with other teams strengths, weaknesses, hot/cold, that is why things get so exciting. I figure I will have to do this yearly, if I continue to keep this blog up, which can be taxing at some times and rewarding at others. Great conversation piece, anyways, that is for future Loom to worry about. Let's get nasty with the Mushroom Kingdom regional:
Bonk's giant noggin cannot break through Oblivion's massive armor and loses in the play-in game. Not even Elder Scrolls can hold a candle to the timeless classic Zelda:A Link to the Past. The Ms Pac Man Tetris/Dr Mario was an intriging matchup of widely popular family-type games. Tetris/Dr Mario was simply too much in this one. Does anyone remember getting Super Tecmo Bowl? The stat tracking, the hospital, the halftime show, the plays, the everything was way advanced and completely ahead of its time. I remember playing every game into a season and the power went out in week six at casa de Anderson, thus rendering all my data gone. From then on I'd take a team and take them to the promised land, hey, you can only take the Chiefs to the Bowl so many times. This game upsets GTA barely, although that was the game that started it all with the open environments and such that everyone continues to copy to this day. Crazy Taxi is fun to play to this day, everyone loves to take people to KFC, and it really got the dreamcast off of shelves and into homes. I cannot fathom to this day how many quarters I put into NBA Jam Arcades or hours Ii spent playing it on every system. I love playin Hoef in it, and enjoyed being a top ten player when the machine was at hair of the dog. The rest of the games are pretty self explanatory, the games they beat were each good in their own right, but simply overmatched. I did enjoy Soul Reaver, I may pick up a copy on Ebay since my PSOne is broken and my dreamcast is hooked up currently. The puzzles, the soul-reaving, it was one engaging and tough game. Fable II would keep me from going out. Winner.
Captain N:
Hit N Run was a fantastic game and pong is old school. Ya know what? Who really wants to hear me babble about video games for a half hour? I'm going to clean my loft and play a little MLB 2K10. The toughest game to pick in each regional is highlighted, here it was KOTR and Wii Sports. Enjoy and see the bracket below.
